 | A: I've had good luck with the wide, double-sided tape that you can get at the pet store. They do collect pet fur, so they don't look so super, but you don't have to leave it up forever if you can break the habit. However, cats do lay down a scent with their claws and will keep scratching a spot if it is still there, so you might want to use one of those liquid "no-scratch" products on the spot, although they smell a little funky at first.
Of course, they MUST have something that they can scratch. Something to try with the tape (or instead of it) is putting down one of those great cardboard scratchers right NEXT to the place they scratch. Sprinkle some catnip on it the first time. My cat is so into his that he will always choose that over furniture if it is just as convenient.
Last thought is the ol' squirt gun. This is most effective if you hide from your cat when you do it, so he thinks it just "happens." If not, he'll still scratch when you're not around.
