The lists of names are alphabetical and established many years in advance. Individual names will appear in rotation unless they have been retired, usually due to tremendous damage and lost of life due to a storm by that name. Katrina and Rita were both retired after the 2005 season. This request must be made by the country or countries that suffered the damage.
